In Austin, Texas, on Thursday, Tesla (TSLA.O) will host an event for its specially designed robotaxi Cybercab amid much excitement and concerns about the technology’s safety and regulatory obstacles.
The Cybercab is Tesla’s first car built entirely for autonomous driving. It is a two-seater with butterfly doors and no steering wheel or pedals. There have been some test models with steering wheels seen on American roads.
The car was introduced to the Warner Bros. studio roughly two years ago, and it is anticipated to join Tesla’s fledgling robotaxi service. Elon Musk, the CEO, stated that it would eventually retail for $30,000. According to him, one of the keys to Tesla’s future success is self-driving technology.
Riders of Tesla’s existing robotaxi fleet, which is based on the Model Y, were given the opportunity to participate in a “Cybercab Launch Event”; however, the company has not disclosed the nature of the launch. According to some user posts, Tesla has been advertising the event as “Exclusive Access: Cybercab” in posts on X and has given invitations to specific people.
The event’s time has not been disclosed by Tesla. Major events are typically livestreamed by Tesla, but the company has not formally confirmed if it will do so on Thursday.
In April, Tesla began manufacturing a few Cybercabs and has begun testing them on public roads.
According to a report published in The Information last month, Tesla informed employees that it would start the deployment by providing rides to its employees on public highways. A few days later, it will integrate Cybercabs into its robotaxi service in Austin.
In order to run the service commercially, Tesla has not disclosed whether it has obtained regulatory clearance or whether it has concluded that it complies with federal safety standards.
